Grimm (Hamburg)

The Grimm is a former island at the mouth of the river Alster in the Elbe; now called the name of a street in Hamburg's Old Town. The march was located east of the island Cremon from which it was separated by the now filled- Steckelhörnfleet, and extended south of the present Willy -Brandt-Straße from St. Catherine's Cemetery in the West until about the Meßberg in the east ( see figure).

Grimm and Cremon together formed since the first half of the 13th century, the parish of St. Catherine. Previously had Adolf III. Schauenburg and Holstein brought settlers from Westphalia. To make the Grimm colonized, the island shore was increased after three storm surges 1216-1219 the island was also dammed. Until 1300 the island was outside the city walls.

Typical of the wrath of the Fleet transitions. Originally, the settlers built far from the water. As demand grew, and also emerged waterfront homes, sold the first settlers of their land by the water. However, to get to the river, they secured small passages Fleet transitions, towards the water.

The Grimm had the hamburger arrived safely fire of 1842 and was one of the few areas of Hamburg's Old Town, which is still owned historic buildings in the 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, the population composition began to change: The original living there merchants had moved to the suburbs since the Hamburg fire and the abolition of Torsperre 1861. In their place attracted the poorer classes in the meantime often in need of renovation houses of the old town. Most of the Grimms was destroyed in the Hamburg firestorm 1943. Houses that were received in 1961, were the houses Grimm 12, 14 and 16 (formerly Grimm 20, 19, 18). From the house Grimm 31 the ceremonial blanket is received, the merchant hall adorns inside of the Museum of Hamburg History 1922 since the opening of the museum.
