Großer Falkenstein

F6

The Great Falkenstein is a 1315 meter high mountain in the Bavarian Forest, about five kilometers southeast of Bavarian Eisenstein in the expansion area of the Bavarian Forest National Park.

There is a shelter in the Bavarian Forest Association, Section Zwiesel, which is open in summer and daily in the winter on weekends and nights allows on its summit. The Falkenstein protection house was built from the fall of 1932 according to the plans of the Straubinger city architect Oskar Schmidt, opened to the public on January 7, 1933 and inaugurated on 15 and 16 June in 1933 in the framework of a field mass by the priest Louis Thaler Maier. It offered then already 30 accommodation places.

On September 12, 1975, the shelter was opened again after two years of renovation and expansion work of some 2000 participants. It has since been 60 places to stay.

From the summit cross, you have a wide view to the west and south of the Great Arber, Osser the Great, the town of Zwiesel and the Great Rachel.

The climb to the summit is possible on the trails blueberry, yew, silver leaf and ash with the starting points Zwieslerwaldhaus, Kreuzstraßl and Scheuereck in around two hours. Worth seeing is the so-called Höllbachgspreng, a rocky area with a springing in a canyon stream that to Höllbachschwelle, a small lake, crashing down into several waterfalls and numerous rivulets. The road through this area is extremely strenuous and should only be used by experienced hikers.

To the west lies 125 meters below the Small Falkenstein, also a notable viewpoint.
