Großer Jasmunder Bodden

The Great Jasmund is a lagoon and an edge waters of the southern Baltic Sea in Pomerania within the island. He belongs to the North Rügen Bodden.

The lagoon is approximately 14 kilometers long and an average of six kilometers wide and up to seven feet deep. The Great Jasmund has an area of ​​58.4 square kilometers, with Breetzer Bodden, Breege, Lebbiner Bodden, Neuendorfer Wiek and Tetzitzer lake increases the total water surface to more than 94 square kilometers.

The water surface is surrounded to the north by the peninsulas Wittow and Jasmund, connected by a narrow spit Schaab. On the south of the main part of the island of Rügen, the Muttland, the Bodden. In the east there is at Lietzow via a drain to connect to the Little Jasmund. The separation of the two Bodden took place only in 1869 by a dam embankment ( B96 and railway Stralsund - Sassnitz ). Towards the west a narrow connection with the current Rassower and is therefore connected to the Wittower ferry to the Baltic Sea the bay. The western part of the bay includes the Breetzer Bodden, Breeger Bodden and Bodden Lebbiner, strictly speaking, no longer belong to the Great Jasmund. The north of the bay is relatively little organized. Only the Spykersche lake near Spyker extends into the interior. The waters of the Great Jasmund Bodden is composed of freshwater streams and the opening out of the salty water of the Baltic Sea and is with a salt content of 0.7 percent to 0.8 percent as brackish water. Almost the entire shore is surrounded by reeds. Some of the shoreline is pronounced as a cliff by the surf of the former Litorinameeres originated thousands of years ago, when the island cores Wittow and Jasmund were not yet connected by the Schaab.

The lagoon is considered to be rich in fish and is also used for bathing and sailing. Major ports are in Ralswiek, Polchow, Breege and Martin harbor in Sagard.
