Green Castle is a municipality in Upper Austria in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems in Traun quarter with 3818 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The competent court is the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems.

Geography

Green Castle is located on 365 m altitude in Traun quarter. The extension is from north to south and 12.2 km from west to east 6.2 km. The total area is 43.2 km ². 48.4 % of the area is forested, and 41.2% used for agriculture. The eastern boundary of the municipality is formed entirely by the river Steyr.

Neighboring communities

History

Originally in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria lying, was the place since the 12th century the Duchy of Austria. Since 1490 he has been the Principality of Austria above the Enns attributed. During the Napoleonic Wars, the place was occupied several times. Since 1918, the town belongs to the province of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the town belonged to the " Upper Danube ". In 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria.

Castle and church

A castle on the hill in today's church Obergrünburg was first mentioned in 1130. She was a founding of a Bavarian Reichsministerialen " Poppo ". Such Reichsministerialen maintained close relations with the Babenberg and also joined occasionally their entourage. Later, the castle must have fallen into the possession of the Rohrer. Anyway, Duke Albrecht III. the castle in 1390 simultaneously with the Rohrer property Leonstein where emissaries of the Archbishop of Salzburg, were detained, besiege and destroy. Today there is the parish church Obergrünburg. Church and mountain are called Georg Matthäus Vischer's still 1669 map Archiducatus Austriae Superioris Descriptio facta Anno 1667 as Grien mountain.

  • Even before the municipal boundary on Forest Neukirchen area is the Green Castle station of Steyrtalbahn. This is run as a museum railway in the summer months and the Christmas period.

Coat of arms

Official description of the municipality coat of arms: battlements shaped divided; above in a red gold, black reinforced, border lion, down in green a silver wave bar in the sign. The municipality colors are red -yellow-green. Battlements division and Leo talk emblematic of the place names Grünburg or Leonstein; the wave bar refers to the Steyr, which, flowing from south to north, is on 17 km of the eastern boundary of the municipality.

In 1991 the municipality had 3,698 inhabitants according to the census, in 2001, finally 3830 and 2003 4085.

Traffic

Bus and train

The Steyrtalbahn, perverse to 1982 from Steyr to Green Castle and formerly also continue to Klaus at the Pyhrnbahn, is now operated during the summer months and the Christmas period as a museum railway. Stations with regular passenger traffic are located in Kirchdorf an der Krems and Klaus ( each about 20 miles from Green Castle ) and pipe in Krems Valley ( about 15 miles from Green Castle, all stations on the Pyhrnbahn ). Green Castle is accessible by post bus directly from Steyr, Kirchdorf an der Krems, Sierning and other places.

Road

Green Castle is located on the road B 140 Steyr Steyr after Klaus. Under the heavy traffic, especially on trucks that had to squeeze through the narrow center, the place had to suffer long. Is running as a tunnel bypass road, which was opened in 2008, has improved the situation. A county road leading from Green Castle on Steinbach an der Steyr to Ternberg. The nearest motorway connections are located in Sattledt (connection to the West Autobahn A1, about 27 km from Green Castle ) and Klaus ( Phyrn A9 motorway, about 18 miles from Green Castle ).
