Gsteig bei Gstaad (French Châtelet) is a municipality in the Obersimmental -Saanen of the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Gsteig is a municipality without civic community. Mayor Martin Marti (2011 ). In addition, there is a Reformed congregation.
Name
Gsteig goes back to the Old High German steiga (rise) and marks the spot where the old trail linkage after the Col du Pillon increases. The name comes from the Old French Chastellet " chastel " - the name for the castle, fortress or summit.
Geography
Gsteig near Gstaad lies in the Bernese Oberland on the road to Col du Pillon. The municipality comprises the towns of Gsteig and Feutersoey. The neighboring communities of north clockwise beginning are Saanen, Lauenen, Savièse, Ormont -Dessus and Château d'Oex. The mountains in the south of the community form the boundary to the Wallis. In the district Feutersoey is the Arnensee, an artificial lake.
