Guido Fanconi

Guido Fanconi ( born January 1, 1892 in Poschiavo (Graubünden ); † October 10, 1979 ) was a Swiss pediatrician. He described in 1927 for the first time named after him, Fanconi anemia, an extremely rare and often fatal genetic disorder. Also the De - Toni- Fanconi syndrome goes back to him.

Fanconi studied medicine in Lausanne, Berne and Zurich. In 1919 he was in Zurich PhD ( five cases of congenital intestinal obstruction ). From 1920 to 1926 he qualified as a pediatrician Emil Feer ( 1864-1955 ) at the University Children's Hospital Zurich. In 1926 he habilitated with the work of Clinical and serological contributions to the scarlet problem. In 1929 he became director of the Children's Hospital Zurich and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Zurich. In 1940 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.

Work

Fanconi is regarded as one of the founders of modern pediatrics and led a biochemical and physiological examination procedures for the investigation of clinical problems. He sat for the first time pectin as a remedy for diarrhea a. He was 1947-1950 President of the International Pediatric Association ( IPA), its general secretary from 1951 to 1967. In 1945 he founded the journal Acta Helvetica Paediatrica.
