Gustav, Duke of Zweibrücken

Gustav Samuel Leopold ( born April 12, 1670 the Stegeborg in Söderköping, † September 17, 1731 in Zweibrücken) was Duke of Palatinate -Zweibrücken.

Origin

Gustav Samuel Leopold was the son of Adolf Johann I, Count Palatine and Duke of Palatinate - Kleeburg (1629-1689) and his second wife Elisabeth Else Brahe to Wisingsberg ( 1632-1689 ). In 1696 he converted to Roman Catholicism.

Rule

He was from 1689 already Duke of Kleeburg and with the death of Charles XII. of Sweden 1718, he was also Duke of Palatinate -Zweibrücken. He was the last reigning member of the Wittelsbach line Palatinate -Zweibrücken - Kleeburg.

He transferred the residence after two bridges to Zweibrücken castle and let in Jägersburg 1720-1725 by Jonas Erikson Sundahl build the eponymous Baroque residence castle Gustav castle.

Marriages

He married on 10 July 1707 Countess Palatine Dorothea von Pfalz- Veldenz - La Petite-Pierre ( born January 16, 1658 Luetzelstein; † August 17, 1723 in Strasbourg ) in Zweibrücken. She was a daughter of Count Palatine Leopold Ludwig von Pfalz- Veldenz - La Petite-Pierre (* 1623, † 1694 ) and Countess Agatha Christine von Hanau- Lichtenberg ( * 1632, † 1681).

The marriage of Gustav Samuel Leopold and Dorothea were divorced on 23 April 1723. Then he married on May 13, 1723 morganatic Luise Dorothea, Countess of Hoffmann ( 1700-1745 ). She was the daughter of Oberhof Jägermeister Johann Heinrich von Hoffmann. For Luise Dorothea he left in 1723 near Wörschweiler in Gutenbrunn build the Louisenthal castle.

Both marriages were childless.

At his death, his estate fell to Christian III. from the line of Palatinate - Birkenfeld - Bischweiler.

Tomb

Gustav Samuel Leopold's grave is located in the Alexander Church in Zweibrücken. Luise Dorothea was buried in the parish church of Luetzelstein.
