Gustav Hegi

Gustav Hegi ( born November 13, 1876 in Rickenbach, canton Zurich, † April 23, 1932 in Goldbach, community Küsnacht, Canton Zurich ) was a Swiss botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Hegi ".

Life and work

Hegi's father was a pastor and Cantonal Council. After attending high school in Winterthur, he studied botany at the University of Zurich. One of his teachers was Hans Schinz. He received his doctorate in 1900 at the University of Zurich and was under Karl von Goebel 1902-1908 curator at the Botanical Garden Munich. He habilitated in 1905 in Munich. From 1910 to 1926 he was an associate professor of botany at the University of Munich and the Swiss Consul General from 1910 to 1920 and from 1920 to 1926 in Munich. In 1926 he put out health reasons all his offices.

From 1905 Hegi created with his work alpine flora the first comprehensive account of the flora of the Alps. At the request of his publisher, he made subsequently to the task to build a similar work for the entire German flora. Between 1908-1931 he published this work of the century under the title Illustrated Flora of Central Europe. It comprised in thirteen monumental volumes total 7,800 pages. Of Hegi has processed approximately two-thirds of themselves, the rest comes from co-authors. According to Hegi's death the work of many authors and author Communities has continued to this day and continuously adapted to the latest findings of Botany. 1975 was the work of 19 volumes plus index volume part and expanded to 1990 to a total of 22 sub- volumes plus index volume.
