Haaften

Haaften is an embankment village and main square of the former municipality Haaften in the province of Gelderland, in the municipality of Neerijnen since the local government reform in 1978.

Location

Haaften lies on the River Waal. Between the former rural community ( including the villages Hellouw and Tuil included ) and the big part of the municipality is the A2 motorway. Early 2007, the town with 3021 inhabitants, the largest number of inhabitants in the municipality Neerijnen.

Traffic

Haaften has an overnight port for ships up to 105 meters and there also a place to stay for trucks. The port can accommodate 25 vessels and operated by Rijkswaterstaat.

Haaften is located on the provincial highway 830 which leads from Gorinchem to Geldermalsen. About the A2 and the A15 Utrecht, 's- Hertogenbosch and Rotterdam are within easy reach.

Zaltbommel, on the island Bommelerwaard can be reached via the A2 and Martinus Nijhoff - Bridge or by ferry Herwijnen - Brakel.

History

  • To 960 Haaften is mentioned (as Hoaftens ) in a document, in the enumeration of the possessions of St. Maarten's in Utrecht, the predecessor of today's cathedral church.
  • By 1300 receives Johan de Cocq the village as a dowry.
  • 1672: A French army devastated the castle Goudenstein. Only a damaged corner tower with a few pieces of wall remains standing, which was restored in 1968.
  • June 9, 1866: The " Great Fire " destroyed 65 houses and the school building.
  • June 25, 1967: A tornado that severely damaged the nearby village Tricht, killing five people, destroyed in Haaften along with several greenhouses the Crobhuis, a characteristic building in the Crobschewaard, next to the brick of the village. The Crobhuis had played an important role in the social life of Haaften in the 19th and 20th centuries as a place for marriages, festivals and events.
  • January 1, 1978: Haaften is affiliated with neighboring places for community Neerijnen. The former community center of the village Haaften on the Rue Royale is then converted into a residence, as a new community center has since served the fort Neerijnen.
  • February 2, 1995: As a result of the high water level in the river Waal, the village was evacuated for three days.
