Location and economic

The town of Zaltbommel is situated on the south bank of the River Waal at the motorway A2 Utrecht - 's- Hertogenbosch and close to the railway between the two cities. Not far from the city, while Loevestein castle, Waal and Maas rivers flow together.

For the economy of importance especially tourism (see below: Sightseeing) are the horticulture and fruit ( in the city there is a fruit auction ) as the industry ( brick factories along the river; small businesses in the city).

Zaltbommel is the head office of the dairy group Campina BV.

History

Already in the year 850 is the talk of a village Bomela. In 999 Otto III was staying. in Zaltbommel and gave the place its customs as well as the brewing, market, mint money .. Count Otto II of funds lent Zaltbommel 1231 another important city rights, which were completed with the right to construction of the Wall in 1316. Count Rainald I of monies paid to the turn of the 14th century except Zaltbommel from some other communities in the region with town rights. These cities prospered in the sequence. About the rivers, notably the Rhine, was a vast, foreign commerce. Zaltbommel Gelderland belonged to the "Quartier " ( = District ) Nijmegen. The first syllable of the place name Zalt - dependent with one of the most important trade goods, common salt, together. Also, wine was one of the major trade goods. Zaltbommel capital was significantly accumulated.

1412 Zaltbommel was besieged by Duke Rainald IV of Jülich funds for several weeks. The famous Geldernsche commander Martin van Rossum settled in 1535 in what was then the Duchy of funds strategically important Zaltbommel build a house that has been preserved and now houses the local museum. In October 1537 joined the Gelder knights and cities, among them Zaltbommel, against the plans of Duke Charles of Egmond, to inherit the duchy at his death to the king of France. On 14 November, Zaltbommel, Roermond, Venlo, Zutphen and Tiel united to a mutual defensive alliance. On 19 November, the Duke relented, on 12 December upheld a state parliament in Nijmegen, the old Erbordnung.

Until about 1600 flourished Zaltbommel. Then followed the decline, caused inter alia by the emergence of a sandbar in the river and the competition of 's-Hertogenbosch. To new heights Zaltbommel came in the 19th century, when several industrial enterprises settled in the port city. The Zaltbommeler claim that three famous people have visited their city: the meteorologist Buys Ballot (which here as a boy actually attended high school ); the composer Franz Liszt ( probably not true ); and Karl Marx. The latter has actually in Zaltbommel a relative called Philips visited to be financially supported by him; but he only got a bond. The Zaltbommeler Family Philips founded in 1877 in Eindhoven, the Philips Group.
