HACEK endocarditis

HACEK is the acronym for a group of Gram-negative, bacterial causative organism in the laboratory to grow only after prolonged incubation due to their particular growth conditions. In the laboratory diagnosis of infective endocarditis should always be thought of them, they account for about 3% of all endocarditis from.

To HACEK group are counted:

  • Aggregatibacter aphrophilus (formerly Haemophilus aphrophilus and H. paraphrophilus, hence the " H" in HACEK )
  • Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (previously Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans ),
  • Cardiobacterium hominis,
  • Eikenella corrodens,
  • Kingella kingae

The natural habitat of HACEK group is the mouth and throat.

Treatment of choice for detection of pathogens is ceftriaxone, a cephalosporin group 3a.
