Haito

Haito, also Heito and Heitto written (about 762; † March 17 836) was a native of the Alemannic abbot of the monastery of Reichenau. From 805-823 until he was bishop of Basel.

Abbot Haito came as a five-year student at the monastery island of Reichenau and is one of the most important abbots of the monastery. Under him, the new building of the Reichenau Marie cathedral was executed which is still preserved; especially the Vierungsanlage. On Haitos work also involves maintenance and expansion of the library goes back. As Bishop Haito was builder of the founding assembly of the Basel Cathedral. Haito also belonged to the confidant of Charlemagne, like his failed diplomatic trip to Byzantium ( 811 ) proves. The St. Gallen monk Notker Balbulus (ca. 840-912 ) describes him in his Gesta Karoli Magni ( " deeds of Charlemagne " ) in a largely stylized report the arrival of a Byzantine embassy at the imperial court even as one of the pillars of Charles:
