Halebid (also Halebidu; Kannada: ಹಳೆಬೀಡು Halebidu [ hʌɭebi ɖu ː ] ) is a town in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Today, a small village, was Halebid under the name Dorasamudra from the 12th to the 14th century capital of the Hoysala Empire. Halebid is located in the southern Karnataka in the district of Hassan 31 km north of the district capital, Hassan and 149 kilometers north- west of Mysore.

History

Dorasamudra was built by King Vishnuvardhana (ca. 1108-1152 ) founded as the capital of the Hoysala dynasty. At the height of his power, the Hoysala Empire encompassed large parts of present-day Karnataka. Run by Malik Kafur the army of the Sultanate of Delhi plundered Dorasamudra 1311 and again in 1327, ushering in the end of the Hoysala rule one. Dorasamudra sank to an obscure place, which was now called as Halebid ( Kannada for " old capital ").

Attractions

At the Hoysala period in Halebid remember today the end of the 12th century built Hoysaleshwara Temple and the smaller Kedareshwara Temple and two Jain shrines. The temples of Halebid belong together with the temple of Belur and 16 km westerly of the Somnathpur, near Mysore the finest examples of Hoysala architecture.
