Haller Mauern

The Haller walls are a small mountain range in the Austrian part of the Northern Limestone Alps. Your craggy limestone walls form the north western end of the Ennstaler Alps. Although Haller walls form an independent mountain range, they are often counted among the famous Gesäuse mountains.

Topography and adjacent mountains

In the western burr profile of Haller walls, the boundary is between the provinces of Upper Austria and Styria. On the Pyhrgas ( 2244 m ), the walls Haller their highest point. In a lightweight, final arc to the north of the mountain range runs from west to east. In the north the road bounded on the 985 m high Hengstpass and through the valley of Laussabachs Haller walls. This road connects the villages of Windischgarsten and Altenmarkt bei Sankt Gallen and separates the Hallermauern from Sengsengebirge and from Reichraminger Hintergebirge. To the east of the 861 m high Buchenauer saddle separates the Haller walls of the northern Gesäuse mountains. The Buchenauer saddle connecting St. Gallen with the market Admont. In the south the through by the Enns Admonter wide basin provides a nice contrast to the steep limestone walls of the Hall walls. South of the Enns which also belongs to the Alps Ennstaler Eisenerzer Alps rise. Beyond the 954 m high Phyrn Pass, which connects with Liezen Windischgarsten, is the Warscheneck. This mountain range is the eastern foothills of the Dead Mountains.

The highest peaks

The western corner of the main crest forms the 2244 m high Great Pyhrgas. This mountain is also the highest peak of the Haller walls. The summit offers a beautiful view. The ascent of the mountain requires also on the normal route slip resistance. Particularly striking is the following Kalkkegel east of the 2197 m high Scheiblingkirchen stone. It provides the right conditions for both hikers as well as for the most demanding climbers. About the cross wall ( 2091 m) and the Kesselkargrat (1984 m), the ridge extends further (also called Bärenkarmauer ) to 2172 m high tower witches. The eastern corner of the main crest forms the 2065 m high Natter bolt, the mountain of Admonter house - a shelter in 1723 m height. South-west of the main ridge, the Bosruck rises (1992 m) and to the south is the Pleschberg (1720 m); both are known for their beautiful panoramic view.

Huts and mountain pastures

As a base for the western summit between Bosruck, Big Pyhrgas and Scheiblingstein to offer three refuges to: The 1043 m high Bosruckhütte that Hofalmhütte in 1305 m height and Rohrauerhaus ( 1308 m). Another base for hikers is the Ardningalm. The Warteckalm became the home of a remarkable Alpine Pasture Museum. To the east of Hallermauern the 1723 m high Admonter house serves as a base to Climb the snake bar, the Witch Tower, Admonter waiting and Grabner stone. The local mountain of beautifully situated Grabneralmhauses ( 1391 m) is the 1847 m high Grabner stone.

Significant valley communities

Northwest of the Haller walls lies the market town of Windischgarsten. Chair lift up to the 858 m high Wurbauerkogel, down the valley, there is the possibility to use a summer toboggan run. A scenic road leads east over the Hengstpass in the valley of the Laussabaches. In Altenmarkt the road branches off to St Gallen with a beautiful parish church and the ruins of gallstone, a former refuge of Admonter abbots. About the Buchenauer saddle ( 850 m), the road to Admont with its beautiful houses. The cultural highlight of the town is the famous Benedictine Abbey with the largest monastery library in the world, an impressive collegiate church and several major museums. About Admont rises the castle Rothelstein, a former summer residence of the abbots Admonter. Today, the castle is one of the finest hostels in the country. The parish churches in the neighboring towns Weng and Hall are also worth seeing. A few kilometers further determined the Sanctuary Fraunberg the landscape, with beautiful views of the Haller walls and on the western Gesäuseberge. The town Liezen is a modern shopping center and a major transportation hub. About the 954 m high Pyhrnpass the road to the hospital on Phyrn. The Church of the Assumption has a magnificent interior with frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte. The altars are works of famous artists such as Veit Koniger or Martin Johann Schmidt. Spital am Pyhrn is the starting point of a funicular to the Wurzeralm and a hike to Dr. Vogelsang Gorge.

Flora and Fauna

Among the most famous elements of the insect fauna is certainly one of the Apollo butterfly ( Parnassius apollo ).
