The Hangang ( Han River = ) is 497.5 km with the fourth longest river on the Korean peninsula and the second longest in South Korea.

Geography

The northern arm ( Bukhangang ), which is 325.5 km long, rises in North Korea near the Kumgang, the southern ( Namhangang ) ( 394.25 km length) in Geumdaesan mountains in Gangwon Province, South Korea. After the union with Yangsuri ( 35km Seoul) the Hangang flows W-shaped by the South Korean capital, then to the northwest, where it forms the border with North Korea, and flows off the island of Ganghwa in the Yellow Sea.

Name

An old inscription from the time of King Gwanggaetos (reigned 391-413 ) calls the river Arisu ( 아리수 ;阿利 水).

There is also a Chinese Han River with the same characters (Chinese汉江/汉江, Pinyin Han Jiang ), which opens at the Wuhan Yangtze River.
