Geographical location
The Samtgemeinde Hankensbuettel is in the northwest of the district Gifhorn, in the southern Lüneburg Heath. The integrated municipality located centrally between the South Heath Nature Park, Nature Park Drömling and the southern edge of the Natural Park of the River Elbe - Drawehn. To the north, the Municipality borders the district of Uelzen. Today's integrated municipality covers an area of 29,026 ha, of which 6.6% are housing and transport area. Major cities in the surrounding area are Celle, Gifhorn, Salzwedel, Uelzen and Witt rings.

Demographic data
After the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics lived 2005 in Samtgemeinde Hankensbuettel 9,766 people in 3110 buildings with a total of 4176 apartments with an average area of 50.5 m per person. Since the founding of the velvet municipality, the population grew steadily, both by a positive natural population development as well as by a positive migration balance. 19.80% of the population in 2005 were under 18 years old, 6.80% between 18 and 25, 25.40% between 25 and 45, 25.20% between 45 and 64, and 22.70% were 65 years old or older. The unemployment rate averaged 12.0 % (men: 11.3%, women: 13.0 %). 2,223 people regularly commute from the Samtgemeinde out in 1192.
History
The area of today's Samtgemeinde Hankensbuettel was until 1051 owned by the Brunonen and the Dukes of Saxe, the Bill Ungern. In the 12th century the Guelphs acquired by inheritance the area. Due to the division of the Guelphs, the area fell to the Lüneburg branch of the Duchy of Brunswick- Lüneburg. From 1705 the land belonged to the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the Kingdom of Hanover in 1814, and after the annexation by Prussia in 1866 to the Prussian province of Hanover. Through the Prussian land reform in 1885 arose from the communities Brome, Hankensbuettel, nature and village Wittingen the circle Isenhagen, which in 1933 merged with the circle Gifhorn.
