Hans Backoffen

Hans Backoffen - well -off, then back Offenn, Backoiffen or oven - (* 1470 in Sulzbach, † September 21, 1519 in Mainz ) was a German sculptor. He was a citizen of Mainz and was in the service of the archbishops as court sculptor. His workshop is from 1505 to 1519 in Mainz detectable.

Life

The birthplace of Hans Backoffen is not precisely localized, since various places named Sulzbach come into question. Probably it is Sulzbach am Main, which at that time belonged to Electoral Mainz, or not too far away from Mainz Reichsdorf Sulzbach at maximum. In 1516 he acquired from Eberbach monastery an old age pension of 18 florins a year for himself and his wife. Backoffen paid for this unique 200 florins to the monastery. He belonged to the parish council of St. Ignatius in Mainz and was buried with his wife in this church.

Style

Hans Backoffen applies along with the slightly earlier time Adalbert masters as one of the most important representatives of the central Rhenish sculpture in Mainz. Both are in the Renaissance at the transition of the late Gothic period. Hans Backoffen is the main representative of the so-called " late Gothic Baroque ", the period from 1500, can be found throughout Europe in the first member of the ( Italian ) Renaissance and tighter, almost schematic representation of shapes and gestures stricter replace the Gothic.
