Hans Canon

Hans Canon ( born March 15, 1829 in Vienna, † September 12, 1885 ibid; actually Johann Strašiřipka ) was an Austrian painter.

Life

Canon (now Prater Road 68) was born in the Hunter line in Vienna. He studied from 1845 at the Academy of Fine Arts and was a pupil of Ferdinand Georg Müller forest and Carl Rahl. In between Canon was until 1855 an officer in the Austrian army, before he completed his studies at the Academy. This was followed by study trips through Western Europe, Italy and the Orient. From 1860 to 1869, Canon held on in Karlsruhe. He married in 1866 Catherine Buchhold. From 1869 to 1874 he lived in Stuttgart in 1874 and returned back to Vienna. In 1882 he married a second time, namely Amalie Veranneman van Watervliet. Hans Canon died 1885 in Rasumofskygasse of 27 and was buried in the Protestant cemetery Matzleinsdorf (Group 19, No. 159).

Performance

Hans Canon was historical and portrait painter of historicism and the Ringstrasse era and contemporary of Hans Makart. He was guided by the old masters, especially to Peter Paul Rubens and Titian. In addition to his oil paintings Canon also created a series of monumental paintings in public buildings of the Ringstrasse era.

Honors

1891 Canongasse in Vienna-Favoriten was named after the artist. As this stretch of road in 1894 came up in another lane, one dedicated Canon also a Canongasse called street in Vienna's Waehring. 1905, a bronze statue of Rudolf Weyr was in the Vienna city park built ( Canon monument). At the birth house Prater Road 68 and at his home Währinger Straße 81-83 are plaques with busts.

1948 Vienna Künstlerhaus was launched a commemorative stamp with his portrait of the Austrian post to a design by Ernst Schrom at 80 years.
