Hans Herbert Fiedler

Hans Herbert Fiedler ( born November 10, 1907 in Trieste, † 14 February 2004 in Munich) was a German opera singer ( bass), and actor. His most famous role was that of Moses in the premiere of Arnold Schoenberg's opera Moses und Aron in 1954. Fiedler was also regarded as a specialist for chanting.

Biography

Fiedler studied German literature and drama at the University of Graz. In 1930, he debuted at the theater of Opava in Bohemia (now Opava ), where he performed until 1935 in various roles. He then went to the National Theatre Munich. From 1937 to 1940 he worked as a radio announcer for the station Munich. During this time he became interested in opera and studied singing first in Munich and later at Moretti in Salzburg.

His opera debut Fiedler graduated in 1940 at the State Theatre Salzburg in the role of Papageno in Mozart's Magic Flute. Two seasons, he sang at the local opera house, before he moved to Usti for the years 1942-1943. Next he became a member of the Municipal Theatre Bremen, where he sang from 1943 to 1953. After a commitment to the city theater Mainz ( 1943-55 ), he moved his focus more toward the concert repertoire, although he was further seen occasionally in stage works. Caused a sensation in his interpretation of the solo bass voice in the German premiere of Bartók's Cantata profana in Cologne in 1954.

Fiedler also appeared regularly as a guest singer at various opera houses and opera festivals. In 1947 he sang in several productions of the opera Dusseldorf. In 1951, he starred in the world premiere of Hans Werner Henze's opera A Country Doctor. On 12 March 1954 he sang the role of Moses in the world premiere of Schoenberg's Moses und Aron. This was first presented in concert, but Fiedler was also in the first theatrical production at the Zurich Opera House on June 6, 1957 on the stage. In 1955 he interpreted the Cardinal of Lorraine in Hans Pfitzner Palestrina at the Salzburg Festival.

1965 Fiedler finished his active singing career and became a singing teacher at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich.

Operatic repertoire

Fiedler's rich repertoire included German, Italian, French, Czech and Russian operas. Among his most successful stage roles included Count Almaviva in Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, the title role in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, the Rodrigo in Verdi's Don Carlos, Iago in Verdi's Otello, the Scarpia in Puccini's Tosca, the carping in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg by Richard Wagner, the title role in Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and the lokanaan in Salome by Richard Strauss.
