Hans Theodor Bucherer

Hans Theodor Bucherer ( born May 19, 1869 in Cologne -Ehrenfeld, † May 29 1949 in Benediktbeuren ) was a German chemist.

Life and work

After studying chemistry at the universities of Munich, Karlsruhe and Leipzig Bucherer made until 1893 his dissertation at John Wislicenus at the University of Leipzig. The title of his dissertation was " On certain derivatives of the keto -hexene the ketone of α - pimelic acid ". Then Bucherer worked at BASF in Ludwigshafen / Rhein. In 1901 he was a lecturer at the Technical University of Dresden, 1913, he was appointed professor at the Technical University of Berlin, from 1926 he worked as a Professor of Chemical Technology at the Technical University of Munich. In addition, he was active in 1908-1911 the industry in the Kalle & Co. AG in Biebrich as laboratory Board and authorized signatory. 1913-1916 Bucherer was a member of the Executive Board of the chemical factory on shares in Berlin (Schering AG). Bucherer emeritus in 1935.

The Bucherer reaction allows phenols and naphthols, etc. to lead by ammonium bisulfite to the corresponding aromatic amines. Under certain conditions, the reaction is also reversible.

The Bucherer -Bergs synthesis is a four-component reaction of carbonyl compounds with cyanide and ammonium carbonate, which provides hydantoins. The hydantoins can be basic hydrolyzed to amino acids. The Bucherer -Bergs synthesis is applied technically in several large-scale plants for the production of DL- methionine in the Evonik Group.
