Hare-Krishna-Mantra

The Hare Krishna mantra is the name of the most famous mantras of the Gaudiya Vaishnava and has become known in the West especially by Hare Krishna followers. It is also called maha-mantra (" Great Mantra ").

In more recent traditions, so with the Hare Krishna, sometimes both verses are exchanged.

The mantra is an invocation of two manifestations of Lord Vishnu: Krishna and Rama. The names are in the vocative. Hare is both the flexion of Vishnu Hari and sobriquet of Hara. The latter name is an epithet of Krishna's beloved Radha, through the invocation called the female energy of God, Shakti, is praised.

Tradition

The Hare Krishna mantra is first delivered into the Kalisantarana Upanishad. Thereafter, it was announced by Brahma to the sage Narada at the beginning of Kaliyuga and explained. The mantra found by the Bengali saint Chaitanya (1486-1533), founder of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, widespread in India and was known in the 20th century by the ISKCON in the West.

Pop culture

The piece loading in the musical Hair uses the Hare Krishna mantra. This sounds even in the background of the song My Sweet Lord by George Harrison, who finished 1970/71 the first place in several charts. The German singer Nina Hagen sings the mantra in the song I love the song, and Paul Hare Krsna Hare Rama! Om namah Shivay on the CD! . Boy George used the mantra in his song Bow Down Mister. In Stevie Wonder's song Pastime Paradise, Mantra is also sung. Also, the performance collective HGich.T mentioned the mantra in her song Tutankhamen.
