Harley Flanders

Harley Flanders (* September 13, 1925; † July 26, 2013 ) was an American mathematician, known as the author of several textbooks.

Flanders studied at the University of Chicago, where in 1947 he took his master's degree and doctorate in 1949 with Otto Franz Georg Schilling and André Weil ( Unification of Class Field Theory). After that, he was at Caltech (as Bateman Fellow ) at the University of Berkeley and from 1960 professor at Purdue University. 1970 to 1977 he was at the University of Tel Aviv. 1977 to 1978 he was a visiting professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, 1978-1985 Visiting Scholar at Florida Atlantic University, from 1985 to 1997 and from 2000 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from 1997 to 2000 at the University of North Florida, while at the Jacksonville State University ( Distinguished Mathematician in Residence ), both in Jacksonville (Florida ).

Flanders dealt first with algebra and algebraic number theory, then by linear algebra, differential forms, differential geometry, mathematical theory of electrical networks and scientific computing. He was also a software developer and wrote in 1975 the pedagogical analysis software MicroCalc.

1969 to 1973 he was editor of the American Mathematical Monthly. In 1969 he was awarded the Lester Randolph Ford Award ( for A proof of Minkowski 's inequality for convex curves, Amer. Mathematical Monthly, Vol 75, 1968, pp. 581-593 ).

He published the lectures on continuous groups of Charles Loewner with Murray H. Protter.
