Harold Spencer Jones

Sir Harold Spencer Jones ( born March 29, 1890 in London, † November 3, 1960 ) was a British astronomer.

Life

In 1913 he became chief assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. 1933-1955 was Spencer Jones Astronomer Royal ( Astronomer Royal). Spencer Jones was 1945-1948 President of the International Astronomical Union.

Spencer Jones determined the solar parallax based on observations of the minor planet 433 Eros during its approach to the Sun 1930/31.

Awards

He attended the Christmas Island, which honored him with a postage stamp.
