Heinrich Birnbaum

Heinrich Birnbaum (also De Piro: Latinized form, * 1403, † February 19, 1473 ) was a German priest and Carthusian monk.

On the period prior to its entry into the Charterhouse of Cologne on March 14, 1435 at the age of 32 years, we know very little.

In a report on his role model in complying with the rules and about his experiences on theology and writings, he was praised by his friars high, and already in 1438, three years after his entrance into the Order, he became prior of the monastery of Mont -Saint-André in Tournai (Belgium ). The desire for a reform of the religious rules also interested Birnbaum. After he had been seven years in Mont Saint André Prior, he was until 1457 in Weselim Rhineland, Rettel (up to 1459 ) in Trier ( to 1461 ) and to 1463 in Diest in Belgium where he held religious services. 1463 he was prior in Liège, but his poor health forced him to leave this office and retire into the Charterhouse of Cologne, where he had spent the first days of his life as a monk. The last ten years of his life wrote several ascetic works Birnbaum and prepared himself for his imminent death before. While he lived in the Charterhouse, where some of the most sacred and studied most men in Germany were living such as Hermann Appel mandrel ( † 1472 ), Hermann Grefken († 1480), Heinrich von Dissen († 1484 ), and Werner Rolevinck († 1502). Birnbaum wrote some instructions and directions for the members of his order, many of which have not been printed, including " Defensio per Immaculato Conceptu BMV " and " Excepta ex malo granato cum nonnullis conjunctis ".

Often Birnbaum was confused with his uncle of the same name, one of the most famous lawyers of the 15th century, who was provost of St. Cunibert near Cologne times and died in 1439.
