Heinrich Conried

Heinrich Conried, born Henry Cohn, ( born September 3, 1855 in Bielsko-Biala, Austrian Silesia, † April 27, 1909 in Meran ) was an influential man of the theater, and from 1903 to 1907 director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Life

Conried attended the Realschule in Vienna, tried first as an actor and brought it up to a commitment at the Vienna Burgtheater ( 1873-74 ), which he should have owed substantial contacts. Later he emigrated to the USA and worked in the then flourishing German-language theater life of the country. 1892 to 1903 he headed the prestigious Irving Place Theatre in New York, to which he also undertook many Viennese actor, about Adolf of sun valley, Friedrich Mitterwurzer or Lina Loos. As director of the " Met " did Conried out among other Enrico Caruso and Gustav Mahler. Legendary was the produced under his direction first staged production of Parsifal outside Bayreuth against the declared will of Cosima Wagner.
