Heinrich Johann Nepomuk von Crantz

Heinrich Johann Nepomuk Edler von Crantz (also Cranz, * November 25, 1722 in Roodt at simmering in Luxembourg; † January 18, 1797 in Zeiring at Jews castle in Styria) was an Austrian physician and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Crantz ".

Life and work

Crantz his doctorate in Vienna in 1750 after studying with Gerard van Swieten ( 1700-1772 ). He specialized at an early stage in the field of obstetrics. To this end, he formed by traveling to Paris and London. He schooled himself to Nicolas Puzo (1686-1753) and André Levret ( 1703-1780 ).

With improved knowledge, he led Austria to the training of midwifery through lessons in the hospital of St. Marx. Crantz improved midwifery education and developed an improvement of Levret'schen forceps. After the Death of Melchior Storck (1721-1756) in 1756, he took over his chair and taught physiology and materia medica to 1774th

In addition to his medical studies, he worked on botanical issues as well as problems of spas, where he wrote the first book in 1777 about spas in Austria.

The genus Crantzia is named after him. In 1754 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.
