Heinrich von Kittlitz

Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Freiherr von Kittlitz ( born February 16, 1799 in Breslau, † April 10, 1874 in Mainz ) was a German ornithologist, naturalist, traveler and draftsman.

Life

He came from the family of the Barons von Kittlitz and Ottendorf that counts for Oberlausitzer nobility. He he took part in the wars of liberation and then continued to serve in the army. He accompanied the 1826-1829 Lütkesche circumnavigation on the Senjawin, which was commissioned by the Tsar of Russia. In 1828 he separated temporarily from the expedition to explore on your own Kamchatka.

On the expedition he discovered on the Micronesian island of Kosrae two bird species that he described and documented by Skins: the Kosrae Crake and the Kosrae SingStar. Both birds were extinct soon after, probably caused by introduced rats. Kittlitz, making it the only western ornithologist who has observed and described this species in the wild. From his trip he brought the Russian Academy of Sciences with bellows 754 of 314 bird species.

The ornithological results, but also his other observations on zoology, botany and geography of Alaska, Kamchatka, the Aleutian Islands and the Caroline Islands were published in his report Memoirs of a trip to the Russian America, to Micronesia and through Kamchatka, which was not published until 1858.

With his friend Eduard Rüppell Kittlitz traveled in 1831 to North Africa, the trip had to cancel but because of a disease. On the return journey he discovered in Egypt the shepherds Plover (English " Kittlitz 's Sand Plover" ). Some other birds discovered by him bear his name, the Kittlitzbrillenvogel and Kurzschnabelalk (English " Kittlitz 's Murrelet ").

Since 1849 he lived in Mainz, where he died in 1874.
