Hendrik Andriessen

Hendrik Franciscus Andriessen ( born September 17, 1892 in Haarlem, The Netherlands, † April 12, 1981 ) was a Dutch composer.

He studied composition with Bernard Zweers and organ with Jean -Baptiste de Pauw at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. At the Maarschalkerweerd Organ of St. Catherine 's Cathedral in Utrecht he was organist and became known for his ability to improvise. From 1926 to 1954 he lectured at the Conservatory of Amsterdam in composition and music theory as well as from 1930 to 1949 at the Institute of Catholic Church Music in Utrecht. From 1937 to 1949 he was director of the Conservatory in Utrecht and then from 1949 to 1957 director of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. The Catholic University of Nijmegen appointed him in 1952 to associate professor; this office he held until 1962. His work was widely spread in the Catholic church music in the Netherlands.

His brother Willem and his sons Louis and Jurriaan are also emerged as a composer.
