Henley-on-Thames

Henley-on -Thames is a town and "civil parish" (municipality) in England. It belongs to the district of South Oxfordshire Oxfordshire and is located on the Thames River, approximately 15 kilometers north-east from Reading and 15 kilometers west of Maidenhead. In 1991 Henley counted 10,558 inhabitants.

Henley is a center for the sport of rowing, each summer is the Henley Royal Regatta held, one of the social highlights of the year for the English upper class. The rowing competitions of the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948 were held at the traditional route of the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames.

The Neolithic passage tomb of Le Mont de la Ville was translocated from St. Helier on the Channel Islands Jersey to Wargrave south of Henley-on -Thames ( on private property ) in 1788.

Twinning

Henley-on -Thames is twinned with Falaise in France (since 1973) and Leichlingen (Rheinland) in Germany (since 1979). The city also maintains friendly relations with Boroma in Somalia ( since 1981).
