Henri Alain Liogier

Henri Alain Liogier (also Hermano Alain, actually Henri Eugene de Liogier Sereys Allut; born January 31, 1916 in Chomelix, France, † November 9, 2009 in Fort Worth, Texas) was a French botanist. He made ​​a significant contribution in the study of Caribbean flora. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Alain ".

Biography

1940 became Liogier the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences and in 1945 a doctorate in natural sciences at the Universidad de La Habana in Cuba. 1950, 1953 and 1957, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. From 1955 to 1962 he was a research associate at the Harvard University. In the following years he taught as a professor of biology and botany at various universities in the United States and in the Dominican Republic, including from 1964 to 1970 at Manhattan College in New York City and from 1970 to 1976 at the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña in Santo Domingo. In 1965 he was appointed Honorary Curator of West Indian botany at the New York Botanical Garden. In 1978 he was taxonomist at the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico. Most recently, he was a research assistant at the Botanical Research Institute in Fort Worth, Texas.

On numerous expeditions to Cuba (1938-1960), Hispaniola (1968-1978) and Puerto Rico gathered Liogier over 45,000 Herbarium Specimens.

Liogier wrote more than 80 scientific articles and books, and described more than 300 new plant taxa from the Caribbean. His standard works include La Flora de la Española, which was published in nine volumes 1982-2000.
