The University of Havana (Spanish: Universidad de La Habana ), short form UH was founded on January 5, 1728, making it the oldest university in Cuba and one of the oldest on the entire American continent. It is located in Havana's Vedado district.

History

The University was founded under the name Real y Pontificia Universidad de San Gerónimo de La Habana (Royal and Pontifical University of St. Jerome to Havana ). The foundation was by Pope Innocent XIII. and King Philip V of Spain authorized.

In 1842, the University changed its status into a secular educational institution and changed its name after Real y Literaria Universidad de La Habana (Royal and Literary University of Havana ). In later republican times it was called the Universidad Nacional ( National University ).

The University was originally located on the site of the monastery of San Juan de Letrán in Habana Vieja, the historic old town. On 1 May 1902, the campus moved to a hill, which the Habaneros knew as Aróstegui Hill and is known as University Hill today. On the original site in the Old Town is housed since 2007 in a new building, the Colegio Universitario de San Gerónimo that belongs to the university faculty for a preservation order.

The interior of the Aula Magna de la Universidad de La Habana, where the mortal remains of the Cuban thinker Felix Varela (1788-1853) are, were designed by the Cuban artist Armando Menocal. The frescoes are the first faculties of the University: Medicine, science, art, thought, literature and law dar.

At the main entrance to the Rector rises with its neoclassical architecture, inspired by the Greek Pantheon and between the Rector and the grand staircase with 88 steps rises a bronze statue of Alma Mater, symbol of the university, the students welcome with its open arms. The sculpture was created in 1919 by Czech artist Mario Korbel. For the face had a young Cuban woman of 16 years and daughter of José Ramón y Villalón Sánchez, professor of mathematics and analysis, it served as a model. For the body of the artist took an older, Creole woman as a model.

The University had to restrict at different times of the 20th century, their study mode or completely set, which is due to the fact that the students and the faculty of the University had a long tradition of political activity. Particularly affected them were related to the faculties of economics and justice.

University is an important stadium where the traditional Caribbean Games will be held, who internationally known sports people. Following this sporting tradition, sport was included as a compulsory subject for at least two years of study in the curriculum for all schools.

The Act of 11 August 1919 issued by the then President Mario García Menocal ( 1913-1921 ), the University was granted the right to confer the honorary doctorate. 1942 this was included in the statutes of the university and confirmed in 1960 after the victory of the revolution by the Act on University Reform.

The law of the system of awards and honorary titles (Act No. 17 of 28 June 1978 ) was right to any university honors abolished implied, but it was so weak that it in almost all universities in the country is common to this day, such to confer honorary doctorates. In the context of state visits received, for example, in September 2011, the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, and in January 2012 his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana each an honorary doctorate in political science.

Is headed by her university rector, Gustavo Cobreiro Suárez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.

Study

The university currently consists of 15 faculties and 14 research centers in different areas, such as economics, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. It will be taught in 25 disciplines about 6000 students.
