The Universidad de Oriente (Spanish for University of the East) is a Cuban university in Santiago de Cuba.

History

The historical background of the university dates back to 1722, when the priests quorum San Basilio Magno el was founded in Santiago de Cuba. The city was one of the first seven villages that were founded 1514-1515 by the conqueror Diego Velázquez.

As of 1819, there was the approval for the establishment of a university in the eastern region of Cuba. Anyway, the socio-cultural and colonial obstacles as well as the North American influence foiled such a project, however. After the establishment of the Republic in 1902, a new attempt was made to implement these thoughts into reality, but what then eventually took place only on 10 October 1947, when was formed the second public institution of higher education in the country. 1951 laid down the law No. 13 of 23 December 1951 that the University of the East is a public, democratic and autonomous center by Lemma Ciencia y Conciencia - whether science and conscience. Thus, the second oldest university in Cuba was established.

Courses

The UO provides both courses in the first as well as for postgraduate courses in the form of education and training, specialization ready and awards qualifications as a graduate, masters or doctorate.

The university consists of two campuses for academic teaching and scientific work:

  • At the headquarters, the faculties of social sciences, law, economics, sciences, mathematics, computer science and distance education focus.
  • In the extension " Julio Antonio Mella " are the technical faculties, such as mechanics, electrical engineering, chemistry and construction.

Research

The research provides the foundation of the University dar. Particularly noteworthy here are the centers of medical biophysics and applied electromagnetism, the centers of research for industrial biotechnology, computer science, energy technology, economics, and sugar industry.

The UO has international collaborations with universities from Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Nicaragua, Spain, Germany, France and Italy.
