Henri Dumont

Henri Dumont (also Henry Du Mont, * 1610 Borgloon ( Looz ), in Tongeren, † 8 May 1684 in Paris) was a Belgian composer.

Life

Dumont was the son of Henry de Thier and Elisabeth Orban. The family left and moved to Liège Maastricht. There, Henri and his brother Lambert were choirboys at the church of Notre -Dame. 1630 Henri Dumont is named in a Kapitellakt as an organist, which is granted him a leave of 2 months to complete his musical education. In the Bishopric of Liege, where he stayed many a time, he expanded his musical knowledge at Léonard de Hodémont (1575-1639), who, open to coming from Italy currents that influenced him considerably. Dumont was married to Mechthild Loyens, a daughter of the mayor of Maastricht. As a widower, he received the comprehensive income of the Abbey of Silly to Lisieux in Normandy. In 1683 he resigned from all offices and died a year later.

Work

Mainly he wrote church music. His work includes more than one hundred " Petits Motets ", which form the archetype of the French motets. Illustrious successor of this tradition were François Couperin and Jean -Baptiste Lully. Du Mont was the first to introduce the basso continuo in French music and this also wrote.

From Henri Dumont regularly sung in many monasteries and communities after the last common Hore melody of the Salve Regina comes ( praise of God in 1975 No 570 ).
