Henri Lauener

Henri Lauener ( born July 13, 1933 Bern, † October 28, 2002 ibid ) was a Swiss philosopher. He is known for developing the "open transcendentalism " in dealing with thoughts of the American philosopher Willard Van Orman Quine. At his request ( Lauener Foundation for Analytical Philosophy) the Lauener Foundation was founded in 2003, which awards every year the Lauener price.

Life

Raised high above Lake Thun in Krattigen, he studied at the University of Bern, published at a young age Gerd layer three volumes (1958-1963), received his doctorate in 1959 on Hegel. From 1966 to 1970 he taught as a secondary teacher of philosophy at the Bern Neufeld school. After his habilitation in 1967, he was from 1973 until his retirement in 1998 Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bern. He was invited as a guest professor at the Universities of Helsinki, San Diego, Lausanne and Geneva and invited to represent him Kuno Lorenz a, whose philosophical anthropology originated here. He was a member of the Institut International de Philosophie. In the years 1973 to 1993, he organized a series of conferences in Biel and Bern, where in particular Quine and Donald Davidson took part. When, after the death of Ferdinand Gonseth and Paul Bernays, founded in 1947 by it together with Gaston Bachelard philosophical journal Dialectica threatened to take, Lauener took over with his bank to issue and made the magazine into an internationally significant forum for analytical philosophy. His own philosophy, he led in constant conflict with Quine to an open transcendental philosophy.

The built after his death Lauener Foundation is promoting growth in analytical philosophy. Among his students about Alex Burri, Michael Frauchiger, Jürg Joyous, Stephan Hottinger and Herbert Schweizer.
