Henry C. Hansbrough

Henry Clay Hansbrough ( born January 30, 1848 in Prairie du Rocher, Randolph County, Illinois, † November 16, 1933 in Washington DC ) is an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of North Dakota in both chambers of Congress.

Henry Clay Hansbrough was named after former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Clay, was the guest at the wedding of his parents and those proposed to give her first son 's name. After attending the public schools, he moved in 1867 to San Jose, California, where he learned the printing trade and was also active in the commercial sector. After a stay in Wisconsin, he eventually settled in the Dakota Territory. There he called the Grand Forks News (1881 ) and the Inter- Ocean at Devils Lake ( 1883) two newspapers in life.

In Devils Lake also Hansbroughs political career began with the Office of the Mayor 1885-1888. From 1888 to 1896, he was then a member of the Republican National Committee. After the recording of North Dakota into the Union, he was elected as the first representative of the new state in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he remained from 2 November 1889 to 3 March 1891. He did not applied for the re-election and instead ran as a U.S. Senator. After a successful election and several confirmations he belonged to the Senate between 4 March 1891, the March 3, 1909; another attempt for re-election failed. In Congress, he served as Chairman of the Committee on the Library of Congress.

After retiring from the Senate Henry Hansbrough went back to his beschäftlichen operations in Devils Lake as well as in Florida and New York. From 1927 until his death he lived again in Washington. After his cremation Hansbroughs ashes were scattered under an elm tree on the grounds of the Capitol.
