Henry I, Duke of Brunswick-Grubenhagen

Duke Henry of Brunswick -Lüneburg, Duke of Brunswick- Grubenhagen, called the Whimsical (mirabilis ) (* August 1267; † September 7, 1322 in Heroes Castle ) was the first Duke of the newly formed Principality Grubenhagen since 1291 The name Grubenhagen first appeared around. 1617, the previous name of the principality is unknown.

Life

Henry was a son of Duke Albrecht I of Brunswick -Lüneburg. As this 1279 died, his three sons had to share the Brunswick heritage. After a dispute over inheritance, they agreed in 1290th Duke Henry was awarded in 1291 the newly formed Principality Grubenhagen with the cities and castles Einbeck, Osterode am Harz, Herzberg am Harz and Duderstadt.

Henry went down in history as the founder of pit Hagen Guelph Line. Due to the previous inheritance disputes, the pit Hagen Guelphs were allowed to call only the Dukes of Brunswick, Lüneburg as part of their name was awarded to them in the 16th century. His younger brother Albert the Feiste continued as Duke Albrecht II, the line of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel and his youngest brother William inherited the house of Brunswick.

The reign of Henry in Grubenhagen is surrounded by many legends. It is known that Henry led many unsuccessful feuds that had a deep need of money result. Nevertheless, he donated to monasteries and convents in Pöhlde, Katlenburg and Osterode, and St. Alexandri in Einbeck. Hence its nickname of Whimsical stirred.

He was a popular and well-known Prince, the 1291 from the Royal Saxon Count Palatine office was transferred. Henry was traded by some princes and electors as a possible successor of King Rudolf I of Habsburg. In its place, however, the relatively unknown Count Adolf of Nassau was elected king in 1291.

Henry died in 1322 and was buried in Brunswick Cathedral. His sons divided the duchy among themselves; Henry was Duke de Grecia ( Greece ), his second son Ernst was Duke of Osterode and his youngest son, William, Duke of Herzberg was. Only with Duke Albrecht II († 1485 ) was united the Duchy Grubenhagen again.

Duke Henry married in 1282 the Countess Agnes of Meissen ( 1264-1322 ), daughter of Margrave Albrecht of degenerate from the House of Wettin. From this marriage the following children were born:
