Henry of Segusio

Henricus de Segusio ( Henry of Susa ), called Hostiensis (* shortly before 1200 in Susa, † 25 October or November 6, 1271 in Lyon) was canonist and Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

A membership to the family De Bartolomeis in Susa, which is adopted in some editions of his works in the 16th century, is not supported by medieval sources. Henricus studied both rights in Bologna and was ordained a priest in 1233. In 1235 he was prior of the cathedral chapter of Antibes, in 1244, he was appointed Bishop of Sisteron. From 1250 until his elevation to cardinal, he was Archbishop of Embrun in France. Pope Urban IV appointed him on May 22, 1262 to Cardinal Bishop of Ostia. Since 1236 he has been a diplomat for popes as Innocent IV and kings like Henry III. been operating from England.

Hostiensis was one of the greatest canonist of his time. He wrote several works, including: Lectura in Decretales Gregorii IX, Summa super titulis Decretalium ( di Summa aurea ) and Lectura in Decretales Innocentii IV A particular concern of his was the presentation of Aequitas in the ecclesiastical law. Whether he shall inform the decretals 1239 in Paris, is uncertain.
