Hermann Kinkelin

Hermann Kinkelin ( born November 11, 1832 in Bern, † January 2, 1913 in Basel) was a Swiss mathematician and politician.

Life

His family came from Lindau on Lake Constance, 1867, he was naturalized in Basel. Kinkelin was 1865-1895 Professor of Mathematics at the University of Basel. He was an eminent statistician, he founded the Swiss Statistical Society and the Statistical- economic society in Basel and directed in 1870 and 1880, the Federal census in Basel.

Kinkelin was free Inniger. From 1867 to 1902 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, 1877 and 1879 as its president. From 1890 to 1899 he was the National Council.

The constant of Glaisher - Kinkelin bears the names of JWL Glaisher and Kinkelin. In Basel are after him the Hermann- Kinkelin -Strasse, the Hermann- Kinkelin schoolhouse (see High School Cherry Orchard ) and named the Hermann- Kinkelin gym.
