Hermann Wagner (geographer)

Hermann Hans Karl Wagner ( born June 23, 1840 in Erlangen, † June 18, 1929 in Bad Wildungen ) was a German geographer and cartographer.

Life

Hermann Wagner was the son of the physician Rudolf Wagner (1805-1864) and his wife, Caroline Rosalie Wagner, nee Henke, ( 1813-1894 ). His brother was the economist and financial expert Adolph Wagner. Hermann Wagner visited Göttingen in high school and studied mathematics and physics, and here in Erlangen. In Erlangen, he was in 1859 a member of the fraternity of the boys Reuther. In the dying father's wish, he first went into the teaching profession to Gotha and established here close ties to the Geographical Institute of Justus Perthes, which persisted throughout life. 1876 ​​, he was appointed to the newly established Department of Geography to Königsberg, where he moved to the University of Göttingen in 1880. His first pupil was William Sievers, later he was a doctor father from August Wolkenhauer. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts ( 1886) and Vice-Rector of the University of Göttingen.

Wagner retired in 1920. The welcome address goodbye from the academic teaching was signed by all 80 German university teachers of geography.

Hermann Wagner was with Elizabeth Wagner, born Besser (1847-1875), married. The two had three daughters, who married all the professors: Margarete Wagner the church historian Carl Mirbt, Dora Wagner the legal scholar Gerhard Alexander Leist and Rosa Wagner the Germanists Victor Michels.

In the printed version of the 80th birthday of Hermann Wagner his 273 publications were listed individually, these are, among others, by 90 independent works and atlases and 88 essays.

Hermann Wagner is the founder of the Geographical Institute of the Georg- August University, and takes in the development of modern geography a key position. The focus of his forty years of teaching was to improve the geographical teaching and training scientifically qualified geography teacher. Served this purpose, and his successful efforts to control the spread of geography in the German universities. In 1930, the Göttingen Green Trail, which housed Wagner House, renamed to Wagner Road.
