Heyfield, Victoria

Heyfield is a town in the central Gippsland in the Australian state of Victoria, with 2099 inhabitants. It is located 206 km east of Melbourne in the Wellington Shire Local Government Area. The city at the confluence of the Thomson River, Macalister River is a gateway to the highlands of Victoria.

History

1841 described an early settler, James McFarlane, the area as " one waving corn field " similar and called it Hayfield. To 1866, the spelling was changed in Heyfield, but you do not know exactly when and why. It may have been renamed to match the spelling of the neighboring Heyfield station.

1866, James Tyson, a former member of the Parliament of Queensland pastoralist and probably Australia's first self-made millionaire, the land of McFarlane.

The city grew as a stopover point for gold miners on their way to the gold fields of the Gippsland, and on 24 September 1870, own post office was opened.

Heyfield today

Today it is known for its agriculture and forestry. It is the major source of hardwood in Victoria, and the largest wood mill in the southern hemisphere of Gunns Timber Products Heyfield is there.

The irrigation of the area is fed by Lake Glenmaggie.

In December 2005, a skate park in Heyfield was built.

During the great forest fires in Gippsland in December 2006 and January 2007, the city was used as a set-up area for the fire used.

Heyfield and the surrounding area were hit in the winter and spring of 2007, twice of dangerous flooding. The Thomson River overflowed its banks and made the road impassable south of Heyfield.

The city has a football team that plays in the North Gippsland Football League.

Writer

The writer Mary Grant Bruce began in 1910 with her book series Billabong during their stay in the former house of James Tyson.

The poet Shaw Neilson spent some time in the 1920s in Heyfield, where he wrote some poems and helped build the dam of Lake Glenmaggie.
