Highlands County, Florida
The Highlands County is a county located in the state of Florida in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sebring.
Geography
The county has an area of 2,865 square kilometers, of which 202 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Okeechobee County, Glades County, Charlotte County, DeSoto County, Hardee County and Polk County.
History
The Highlands County was formed on April 23, 1921 from portions of DeSoto County and named for the slightly elevated position. This County is a popular tourist area today.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2010 lived in Highlands County 98 786 people in 55 363 households. The population density was 37.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.0 % White, 9.4% Black or African American, 0.5% Indigenous and 1.5% Asian Americans. 5.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.2% in different ethnic groups. 17.4% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 50.1 % of all households lived in 22.0 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 65.8 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.28 persons and the average family size is 2.74 people.
20.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.5 % were 20-39 years old, 22.7 % were 40-59 years old and 39.6 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 52 years. 48.9 % of the population were male and 51.1 % female.
The median income for a household was $ 35,350, while 19.0 % of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 82.09 % of the population spoke Spanish 14.55% and 3.36 % had a different mother tongue.
