History

The first Romanian highway was 113 km long route Bucharest - Pitesti, which was built in the 1960s and renewed in 2000. The track is now section of the A1.

Planning

There are plans to connect to the EU motorway network in the years 2012-2014. The Romanian A1 is connected to the 2015 Hungarian M43. The Romanian A3 2015 will lead to the Hungarian M4.

In 2012, then to follow up Orastie the portion of Deva. Work on the section Orastie - Sibiu ( Herrmann city) and Nadlac ( Hungarian border ) - Arad have begun and should be completed no later than 2015. In addition, the contract section 1 shall Timişoara - Lugoj be completed by 2013. For construction lot 2 Timisoara - Lugoj and construction is not yet clear, since a court ruled the auction faulty and the EU withdrew its funding for this section. The construction work on contract section 1 for Lugoj - Deva has already started and should be completed as April 10, 2013. Two further construction lots in the section Lugoj - Deva are not auctioned. In March 2012, the section is to Sibiu - Pitesti are advertised as PPP.

In addition, the A3 from Suplacu de Barcău should be brought to the Romanian state border at Borş where they will connect to the M4 (Hungary). Bechtel in the area Borş - added Suplacu de Barcău work again, this section is to be opened to traffic by 2013.

The section Gilau - Nădăşelu ( 8 km) to be awarded shortly in order as quickly as possible to allow for the Western Bypass of Cluj ( Kolozsvár ). The next upcoming award section is then Turzii - Ogra, to derive the traffic between Cluj and Târgu Mureş on the A3. Due to delays in the construction of the A3 from Ploiesti to Bucharest is expected to be accessible until March 2012; it is possible that the section is rather opened by Bukarestring to Vaslei.

The first fully completed motorway A2 from Bucharest to Constanta on the Black Sea, where it will connect to the local bypass. More 4 km to the A4, the triangle with the A2 to the DN3, were opened on September 25, 2011. The next year, starting with the avoidance of Bacau be the first section of the Moldovienautobahn (presumably A5).
