Hiram A. Tuttle

Hiram Americus Tuttle ( born October 16, 1837 in Barnstead, Belknap County, New Hampshire, † February 10, 1911 in Pittsfield, New Hampshire ) was an American politician and 1891-1893 Governor of the State of New Hampshire.

Early years

Hiram Tuttle attended the public schools of his home. In 1846 he came with his parents to Pittsfield, where his father worked in a cotton mill. There he continued his school education at the Pittsfield Academy. After leaving school he worked for a clothing store in Concord. Soon after, he was branch manager of the company and in 1858 he acquired the business in Pittsfield. Hiram Tuttle remained until his death with the clothes shop. In addition, however, he became involved in the lumber business and in banking. Tuttle was also involved in real estate and in the railway business.

Political rise

Tuttle was a member of the Republican Party. In 1860 he became parish law enforcement officer ( Town Clerk ) in Pittsfield. In 1873 and 1874 he was a member of the House of Representatives from New Hampshire. Between 1875 and 1877 he was a military advisor to Governor person Colby Cheney and 1878-1881 he was a member of the consultant staff of Governor Nathaniel Head. In 1888 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, when Benjamin Harrison was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the same year he applied unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the office of governor.

Governor of New Hampshire

In 1890 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the gubernatorial election. The election result was, as some gubernatorial elections in previous years, so scarce that the legislature had to decide on the election outcome. These voted for Tuttle, who then could take up his post on January 8, 1891. During his tenure, a new public library was opened in Concord and Durham in an agricultural school was founded. After the end of his tenure, Tuttle competed in 1894 unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the congressional elections. After he retired from politics. Hiram Tuttle died in February 1911., With his wife Mary C. French he had a child.
