Hirmuste is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Kõrgessaare ( Kõrgessaare vald ). It is the second largest Estonian island of Hiiumaa ( German Dagö ).

Description and History

Hirmuste has twelve inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is situated in the northwest of the peninsula Kõpu ( Kõpu pool saar ) near the Baltic Sea beaches.

The place was first mentioned in 1565 as Einfüßlerstelle. As the owner of Hinrich and Bengtt Harmanson are called, to which the toponym dating back well. In 1576 the place is called Hermeste 1599 Hermista 1798 Hirmust. The folk etymology translates the name of the village Hirmuste küla course literally with " terror village".

The place is located in 2005 launched reserve Hirmuste ( Hirmuste hoiuala ). It has an area of 38.3 hectares. The area is designed to protect the endangered flora, especially meadow foxtail and juniper.
