Hiroshi Wakasugi

Hiroshi Wakasugi (若 杉 弘Japanese, Hiroshi Wakasugi ;) ( born May 31, 1935 in New York; † July 21, 2009 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese conductor. Wakasugi led many of the major European opera for the first time in Japan and was awarded several times.

Life

His father was Japanese Consul General in New York. Wakasugi studied after an aborted studies at the Faculty of Economics, Keio University Music at the ( central ) government Tōkyō Daigaku Geijutsu (English Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) at Hideo Saitō and Norbert Kaneko. After graduating, he was appointed conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra Research (Japan). From 1965 he headed the Yomiuri Nippon Kogyo Gakudan, the " Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra " ( Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra ), Tokyo, and developed it into one of the leading orchestras of Japan on. For the premiere of Penderecki's St Luke Passion, he was (芸 术 选 奨 文 部 大臣 赏, Geijutsu - Sensho - mombudaijin - shō, National Arts Festival Prize ) awarded by the Department of Culture with the " culture Referral price of the Minister of Culture " in 1968. He founded in 1969 the Tokyo Chamber Opera Theatre.

In addition to several leading international orchestras Wakasugi was from 1977 to 1983 chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne (WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne ), 1981-1986 General Music Director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Dusseldorf, and from 1987 to 1991 chief conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. From 1982 to 1992 he was permanent conductor of the Semperoper Dresden and the Dresden Staatskapelle.

He was also from 1986 to 1995 Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo Prefecture ( Tōkyō-to Gakudan Kogyo, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra ). He was awarded the Asahi Prize for his achievements and his work, with which he represented as an international conductor Japan 1992. Also in 1992 he received the Prize of the Japan Academy of Arts. In the spring of 1995, he was appointed permanent conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra ( NHK Symphony Orchestra ).

Wakasugi 1986 was awarded the Suntory Music Award ( Suntory - ongaku - shō, Suntory Music Award ).

In 2005 he was artistic advisor of the opera department of the New National Theatre ( Shin Kokuritsu Gekijo, New National Theatre Tokyo ) in Tokyo and was appointed its artistic director (ie music director ) in September 2007. At the time of his death in 2009 he was artistic director of the Biwako Opera Theatre and the Tokyo Chamber Opera Theatre.

Hiroshi Wakasugi had a chair at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Toho Gakuen University ( Toho Gakuen School of Music) hold. He was a member of the Japanese Academy of Arts.
