Horst Köppel

Horst Koppel ( born May 17, 1948 in Stuttgart ) is a former German football player and coach.

As a striker, he was from 1966 to 1979 for VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Moenchengladbach active. With the Borussia it was 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1977 German Masters. He also won the UEFA Cup with the Gladbach in 1975 and 1979. In between Koppel played in the summer of 1976 and 1977 in the North American professional league NASL for the Vancouver Whitecaps.

In the National Koppel played from 1968 to 1973 eleven times and scored two goals. He stood in the Germany squad, which in Belgium became European Champion in 1972.

After his playing days he coached 1.FC Viersen (as player-manager ), Arminia Bielefeld, Bayer Uerdingen, Borussia Dortmund, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Borussia Mönchengladbach. As an assistant coach Koppel was also involved at the 1 FC Cologne Eintracht Frankfurt. He was also active as a coach for the DFB ( inter alia at the World Cup 1986). With Borussia Dortmund 1989 he became the DFB Cup winner as a trainer and followed on March 26, 1992 to Hans -Jürgen Gede at Fortuna Dusseldorf, where Koppel was originally entered on 30 January 1992 as sports director. Under Koppels Director, however, the Fortuna was unable to prevent relegation from the Bundesliga to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of that season. On August 10, 1992 Koeppel was there defrocked. He was succeeded on August 16, 1992 Aleksandar Ristic.

After abroad and coach stations in Austria with FC Tirol Innsbruck and Japan ( Urawa Red Diamonds ) Koppel signed with Borussia Dortmund a contract as a talent scout, which was followed by an engagement as amateur coach of the club. With the amateur team of the BVB the Swabian-born in 2002 was promoted to the Regionalliga Nord and managed with the existing mainly of young players team in the summer of 2003 and the summer of 2004 in the league. For summer 2004, Koppel took over in his hometown Mönchengladbach the vacant coach position at which henceforth referred to as U23 amateur team of his former club Borussia Mönchengladbach, which since the rise of the regional league under different coaches: to ( sequentially Norbert Meier, Holger Fach, Manfred Stefes ) the Regional rise fought.

After Holger Fach was fired as coach of Gladbach Bundesliga Lizenzelf, replaced Koeppel this. Between 28 October and 1 November 2004 as the so-called interim coach and won his first and only match against FC Bayern Munich 2-0 About a week after the dismissal of trade undertook Mönchengladbach Dick Advocaat as the new head coach. According to the U23 Koeppel Borussia oriented again. Since Advocaat's resignation on 18 April 2005 Koeppel was another interim coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach. His successor at the U23 Borussia Mönchengladbach was Horst Wohlers, a former assistant Koppels at the Urawa Red Diamonds. On 18 May 2005 Horst Koppel has signed a two -year contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach as head coach.

Nearly a year later, on 14 May 2006, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Horst Koeppel separated prematurely after completion of the 2005 /06 with the 10th place in the table. This was the best final placement of Borussia since 1996 and until the surprising fourth place in the season 2011 /12.

On August 5, 2006 Koppel signed a contract with Al Wahda (Abu Dhabi ), the reigning vice-champion of the United Arab Emirates. There he was, however, on 11 October 2006 after only four competitive games (total: 1 win, 3 losses ) released.

26 April 2009 Horst Koeppel was introduced as the new coach of relegation second division FC Ingolstadt 04 in order to save him with a placement on second from bottom in the remaining five games before the descent. He thus came over from Thorsten Fink.

But Koppel could not stop the decline of the Schanzer. On 14 May 2009 Ingolstadt lost on home turf 0-1 against FC St. Pauli and was thus definitively relegated firmly. Nevertheless, it held on to Horst Koeppel and wanted to aim for with him direct resurgence. But the start of the 2009/2010 season got more than bumpy and so was Horst Koeppel relieved and released on 8 November 2009, after a 0-2 home defeat by the Wuppertal SV, only 2 points behind second, of his duties. The team put together by him finally made the direct promotion back to the 2nd League under his former assistant coach Michael Wiesinger.
