House of Stolberg

The princes and counts of Stolberg are a widespread noble house in the high nobility of the Holy Roman Empire.

History

About the lineage of the Counts of Stolberg, there are over ten different theories, but of which could not enforce final. Most likely a descent from the Counts of Hohenstein seems to be. The first representative of this family is found in a charter of 1210 Count Henry of Stolberg, who was first mentioned in 1200 when Count Henry of Voigtstedt. While initially Voigtstedt was this Marquis at Artern the seat, it was later than the beginning of the 13th century Stolberg (Harz). The local castle was up to the expropriation of the land reform in 1945 in the possession of the family.

1429 succeeded the Count of Stolberg in the context of inheritance contract to purchase the county of Wernigerode in the northern Harz and thereby expand their sphere of influence much.

1535 died Eberhard IV of Eppstein and his nephew Ludwig of Stolberg inherited by will the county Königstein with the residence castle Königstein im Taunus and the rule Gedern and shares in the Office Ortenberg. Königstein fell in 1581 to the electorate of Mainz, Gedern and Ortenberg have remained to the present day in the possession of the lines Wernigerode or Roßla.

1645 was the permanent division in the older main line Stolberg- Wernigerode and Stolberg- Stolberg younger main line. From Stolberg- Wernigerode diverged at the beginning of the 18th century, the lines Stolberg- Gedern ( until 1804 ) and Stolberg- Schwarza ( to 1748 ) from. Stolberg- Stolberg was divided in 1706 into the two lines of Stolberg- Stolberg and Stolberg- Roßla.

Representatives of the line Stolberg- Gedern reached the 1742 survey in the Imperial Prince by Emperor Charles VII.

In the 18th century ( mediatization ), the rich had immediate Count of Stolberg- Wernigerode the Kingdom of Prussia and the Counts of Stolberg- Stolberg, the Counts of Stolberg- Roßla subordinate to the Electorate of Saxony. With the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1806 Stolberg lost their kingdom and earldom were 1815 final Prussian lords.

The respective nobleman or his firstborn son and presumptive successor in the family estate of Stolberg- Wernigerode houses or Stolberg- Stolberg and Stolberg- Roßla received on October 22, 1890 and 1893 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the granting of the royal or princely title. A branch of Stolberg- Stolberg line in 1980 the Dutch nobility incorporated, but without recognition of the princely title.

The Counts of Stolberg also had claims to the Belgian Agimont and led this name in their title. However, it had made a spelling mistakes. Only by a rescript of December 6, 1780 corrected Count Christian Frederick of Stolberg- Wernigerode the misspelling Aigmont in Agimont used until then.
