Hovnan Derderian

Hovnan Derderian ( baptismal name: Vahram, born December 1, 1957 in Beirut, Lebanon ) is the current Archbishop of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in North America ( Catholicossate Echmiadzin ).

1970-1975 he was trained in the theological seminary of the Cilician Catholicosate and then continued his studies in Echmiadzin on. In 1980 he was ordained by Catholicos Vazken I. to celibate priest and took the monastic name Hovnan. 1980 to 1983 he studied at Oxford and taught from 1983 in Echmiadzin Church History and Church music. In 1984 he was awarded his doctorate for Vardapet. From 1984 he worked as a chaplain in Canada. In 1990 he was elected Primate of the Diocese of Canada and was consecrated on 7 October 1990 Vazken I. Echmiadzin bishop. In 1993 he received the title of archbishop. On 3 May 2005, the annual meeting of the Western Diocese of the USA elected him to their primate.
