Howard Edward Mudd ( born February 10, 1942 in Midland, Michigan, USA) is an American former American football player and current assistant coach. He played as a guard in the National Football League ( NFL ) for the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears.

Youth

Howard Mudd was born the son of Vivian and Howard Mudd in Midland, where he attended high school. Already at school, he played quarterback successful American football. He won with his team the state championship twice and was twice elected to the league selection. In his final year as captain was the appointment of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of his team.

Playing career

College career

After his graduation he joined in 1959 for one year at Michigan State University, before he moved to the Hillsdale College. This college has only one unterklassige football team, ran aground on the Mudd from 1960 as a tackle. During his studies, he was elected twice in the league selections. Mudd left college with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Professional career

Howard Mudd was drafted in 1964 in the ninth round to 113 location by the San Francisco 49ers. Mudd was used by the coach of the 49ers, Jack Christiansen, as a guard to protect quarterback John Brodie. He also had to block the tasks their own running backs, such as the Halfback David Kopay, the way into the opponent's end zone free. Mudd never succeeded with the 49ers in the Play Offs collect. During the 1969 season, he moved to the Chicago Bears. Due to a knee injury he had to end his career after the 1970 season.

Coaching career

Mudd is active as an assistant coach since 1972 and initially oversaw the offensive line at the University of California before moving back to the NFL. It was only in 1985 as assistant coach Marty Schottenheimer with the Cleveland Browns he achieved his first making the play offs. Prior to joining the Kansas City Chiefs after the 1988 season, the team should be able to repeat this performance from Cleveland without ever having to move into an AFC Championship Game. Together with Schottenheimer Mudd moved to Kansas City, where he in the years 1990 to 1992 also succeeded in making the play offs. In 1993 he signed a contract as an assistant to Tom Flores for the Seattle Seahawks. In 1998 Mudd to the Indianapolis Colts. With the team from Indianapolis he should celebrate his biggest successes. Under coach Tony Dungy of the team succeeded in 2006, the move into the AFC Championsship game against the New England Patriots. The 38:34 win the Colts over the Patriots meant a place in the Super Bowl, where the team of Mudd hit the Chicago Bears. The Colts sat down in Super Bowl XLI with by 29:17. 2009 Howard Mudd won with the team from Indianapolis his second championship as an assistant coach. The Colts moved to a 30:17 victory over the New York Jets in the AFC championship game in the Super Bowl XLIV one. The New Orleans Saints went from this game as the winner. They won with 31:17. Mudd wanted to end his coaching career after playing this game. He was in 2010 as a consultant with the Saints, but then moved up to the year 2012 in the coaching staff by Andy Reid at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Honors

Howard Mudd played three times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the NFL season. He was elected twice to the All Pro. He is a member of the Midland County Sports Hall of Fame, in the Athletic Hall of Fame of Hillsdale College and the NFL 1960s All- Decade Team.
