Hudson–Bergen Light Rail

The Hudson - Bergen Light Rail ( HBLR ) is a new tram system in the communities of Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City and North Bergen combines all of which are located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The HBLR part of New Jersey Transit and operated by the 21st Century Rail Corporation. After complete completion the total length of the route network should be 33.2 kilometers ( 20.6 miles ).

In order to meet the increasing traffic in the opposite Manhattan, densely populated area on the banks of the Hudson River Lord, was already planned in the 1980s and early 1990s at alternatives for passenger transport by car. 1996 within the state of New Jersey the company 21st Century Rail Corporation awarded the contract for development, construction and operation of a tramway system. On 15 April 2000 the first line was opened for public use. Meanwhile, use an average of 30,000 passengers daily, the HBLR, which runs on the following three routes:

  • West Side Avenue (Jersey City ) - Tonnelle Avenue ( North Bergen )
  • Hoboken Terminal - Tonnelle Avenue ( North Bergen )
  • 22nd Street ( Bayonne ) - Hoboken Terminal

With the likely total cost of about 2.2 billion U.S. dollars, the HBLR is one of the largest public works projects in the state of New Jersey. Funding is provided by means of both the U.S. federal government and the State of New Jersey.
